This past free agency, the Ottawa Senators signed David Perron to a two-year contract. At 36 years old, Perron's veteran experience was important for the Senators to gain, but it wasn't like that at first at the beginning of this season.
Perron played in the first five games of October and went pointless before needing to leave due to a family emergency with his daughter. Perron returned in November, but then played in only four games before sustaining a back injury.
When Perron returned in late-January, he was still struggling to fit in with the Senators offensively. Now, Perron's offensive boost is helping the Senators out big in the middle of their chase to make the 2025 playoffs.
Perron's offense in March is coming through for Senators big
When February concluded, Perron had recorded just four points in 20 games played this season. Now in March with the Senators chasing a spot in the 2025 playoffs, Perron's offense has taken a turn for the better.
In six games in March, Perron has recorded five points. Perron has recorded at least one point over the past four games played.
Three of Perron's five points have been goals. In the Senators' first game in March against the San Jose Sharks, Perron ended up scoring the game-winning goal. After going pointless against the Washington Capitals in the following game, Perron is now riding a four-game point streak.
During the four-game point streak, Perron has been able to come through at timely matters for the Senators. Against the Chicago Blackhawks exactly one week ago, Perron's goal that he scored was to tie the game at two in the first period. This past Saturday against the New York Rangers, Perron's assist on Michael Amadio's goal was to help the Senators tie the game at three with under three minutes to play in regulation.
Against the Detroit Red Wings this past Monday, Perron scored the opening goal of the game in the second period on the powerplay, and he helped Claude Giroux record his 16th consecutive 40-point season with scoring the goal.
Last night against the Philadelphia Flyers, while Perron only recorded one assist, his +2 rating in the game was the first time all season that he finished with a +2 rating or better. Perron's presence helped the Senators secure a 5-2 win against the Flyers.
While it took some time this season to get Perron going, his March surge couldn't have come at a right time with the Senators holding the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with 73 points. The Senators have earned 11 out of a possible 12 points in March, and Perron has been a big help to help the Senators get their 11 points.
