One of the most highly respected players on the Ottawa Senators roster is 37-year-old Claude Giroux. When the Senators signed Giroux in 2022, they were looking for a veteran presence who can produce offense.
Since signing with the Senators, Giroux has played in 227 games as a Senator. During his Senators tenure, Giroux has been able to achieve career milestones. From reaching the 1,110-point mark, to reaching the 350-goal mark and to playing in over 1,200 career NHL games.
Some might find it amazing that Giroux is still playing in the NHL for someone being drafted in 2006. The longevity of Giroux is quite an impressive one. However, Giroux's consistency in his career hit another mark in last night's win against the Detroit Red Wings.
Giroux has now recorded 16 consecutive 40-point seasons
Giroux played in two games in the 2007-08 season, then recorded 27 points in 42 games in the following 2008-09 season. It's been since the 2009-10 season that Giroux started to be consistent with his offense when he was a then member of the Philadelphia Flyers.
In the 2009-10 season, Giroux recorded 47 points, but it was the first of 16 consecutive seasons in which Giroux recorded at least 40 points in a season. Giroux's assist on David Perron's goal last night in the Senators' 2-1 win against the Red Wings helped him achieve his 16th consecutive season with 40 points. Giroux's 40 points this season is the fifth most on the Senators roster
This season could be viewed as a little bit of a drop off for Giroux after he recorded 64 points last season, but the consistency of Giroux being able to produce offense and leadership is still an impact for the Senators even with 24 less points than last season.
While some players might have gotten injured that caused them to miss games or be impacted by shorthanded seasons, Giroux has been able to be consistent with his scoring despite shorter seasons, but has been able to remain healthy.
In the 2012-13 season, which was 48 games due to the 2012 lockout, Giroux recorded 48 points. In the 2020-21 season, which was 56 games due to COVID-19, Giroux recorded 43 points.
Moving forward this season, the Senators will be relying on Giroux to continue his offensive production to help the team make a serious push for the 2025 playoffs. Giroux and the Senators take on the Flyers tonight at 7 p.m. ET at Wells Fargo Center. At the moment, the Senators are currently the first Wild Card seed with 71 points in the Eastern Conference.
