As training camp gets under way for the Ottawa Senators, there are many storylines to keep an eye on. Many of which could shape the upcoming season for the Sens. Starting with how the new guys mesh with the old.

When the Ottawa Senators brought in their new Oduya and Thompson it was to fill gaps in their lineup. Thompson should be able to fit in nicely as the fourth line centre. However, it will be interesting to see where Oduya falls in the lineup. He was brought in as a natural replacement for Methot, but with many players vying for spots it isn’t guaranteed. It will be interesting to see if he takes the spot next to Karlsson or falters and loses his spot to one of the younger more dynamic options that Boucher has at his disposal.

Key Injuries

Injuries appear to be a big factor for the Ottawa Senators. There was already concern about the return of Brassard and Karlsson. However, now the status of Clarke MacArthur’s career is now in question. MacArthur failed his medical exam at camp and it is uncertain if he will return at all for the Sens. Adding to the fact that Karlsson may be gone longer than expected, the status of these players as the season approaches will be the Sens’ biggest concern.

Can The Kids Step Up

Lastly the most exciting part of camp for the Ottawa Senators is, can the kids step up? Thomas Chabot and Colin White have been heralded as the next generation of star players for the Sens. However, none of that means anything until they show they can do it in the NHL. With openings from injuries at both forward and defence, both players have huge opportunities to make the team. With Boucher more cautious than most when it comes to young players, they will both have to truly make an effort to standout during training camp to make the team.
