One record that not many hockey fans was unbreakable was Wayne Gretzky's goal record. When Gretzky retired in 1999, he finished his career with 894 goals.
Then came along the first overall pick of the 2004 NHL Draft of the Washington Capitals, Alex Ovechkin. Since being drafted, Ovechkin became one of the best player to ever put on a hockey uniform, but not many would've imagined Ovechkin breaking Gretzky's goal record.
Today against the New York Islanders, Ovechkin scored a powerplay goal to break Gretzky's goal record with 895 career goals.

As the Great Eight now owns the NHL all-time goal record, the question can be asked: what was Ovechkin's best goal scored against each team? Against the Ottawa Senators, one goal can stand out for Ovechkin.
OT winner in January 2025 is Ovechkin's best goal against Senators in his career
The date was Jan. 16, 2025. The Senators were hosting the Capitals at Canadian Tire Centre. Before the game, Senators goaltender Leevi Merilainen had just won his last three starts with two of them being shutouts.
Enter the Great Eight to call game. With 1:53 remaining in overtime, Ovechkin snipped a shot to beat Merilainen to win the game 1-0 for the Capitals.

According to Stathead, Ovechkin has recorded 38 goals in 60 games against the Senators. With 38 goals to choose from, Ovechkin's 37th career goal against the Senators would be the best of his career against Ottawa.
To add more impression for Ovechkin, his goal would not only be an overtime winner, but it also set a new NHL record for most goaltenders scored against in NHL history.
The Senators and the rest of the NHL say congratulations to Ovechkin for breaking Gretzky's goal record.
