After the Ottawa Senators won 2-0 on Tuesday night against the New York Islanders, the Senators headed home to face the Washington Capitals for the first time this season.
The Senators were dealt a huge blow to the lineup when defenseman Thomas Chabot wouldn't be able to play. With Chabot out, the Senators were able to hold the Capitals to one goal, but one goal was enough to decide a winner.
The Capitals shutout the Senators 1-0 in overtime at Canadian Tire Centre to drop the Senators to 22-18-4 on the season.
Despite the Capitals being one of the better teams in the NHL, the Senators gave the Capitals a hard fought game, but one goal would be enough to seal the game, and the goal was decided by an all-time great.
2. Still a tremendous start to keep the hot streak going
The Capitals won the game in overtime after Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal with 1:53 remaining in overtime past Leevi Merilainen. Ovechkin's goal now puts him at 21 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record. Even with allowing in an overtime winner, Merilainen kept the Senators in the game the entire time.
Merilainen made 27 saves in the overtime loss. The biggest save Merilainen made was right before Ovechkin's winner. Tom Wilson had a breakaway, but Merilainen denied him to keep the game even at zero.
Despite the loss, Merilainen is now 3-0-1 in his last four starts. The Senators have earned seven out of a possible eight points over the past four games with Merilainen starting in goal. Tonight was the sixth time in eight games played this season that Merilainen allowed in two goals or less. The hot stretch has continued for Merilainen even with an overtime loss.
1. Sens got "goalied" against one of the best
Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson recorded a shutout in his last game on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks, and entered tonight's game with a 19-2-3 record with a 2.23 goals against average and .921 save percentage. Against the Senators, Thompson showed why he's a top goaltender in the NHL this season.
Thompson stopped all 25 saves against the Senators offense. In the second period, Thompson helped shut down all three powerplay opportunities by the Senators.
Sometimes in hockey teams will get "goalied." The Senators had excellent scoring chances throughout the entire game, but Thompson stood tall and recorded his second consecutive shutout.
The Senators will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Boston Bruins at 3 p.m. ET. The Senators won the first meeting this season against the Bruins on Nov. 9 by a final of 3-2 in overtime.
