After scoring seven goals in each of their past two games against the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins, the Ottawa Senators then allowed in seven goals to the Chicago Blackhawks to earn a loss in their last game on Tuesday night.

It was then time for the Senators to host the Calgary Flames to conclude October. Against the worst team in the NHL at home, the Senators' effort was valiant enough to earn a win.

The Senators defeated the Flames 4-3 in a shootout at Canadian Tire Centre. With the win, the Senators improved to 6-5-1 overall on the season.

Against a team that had concerted just one on their last 22 powerplay attempts heading into the game, the Senators penalty kill struggled immediately by allowing the Flames to score two powerplay goals in the first period to trail 2-1 heading into the first intermission. The Senators scored one goal in the period thanks to Lars Eller scoring a shorthanded goal. The score remained 2-1 after a scoreless second period.

With the crowd quiet early in the third period, the Senators tied the game behind an Artem Zub goal 2:36 into the period. However, the Flames regained the lead under six minutes later after a Nazem Kadri goal.

Hope appeared to have been fading away in the final minutes of the game. Then with 2:49 remaining in regulation, Jake Sanderson scored to tie the game 3-3. It was the second consecutive game in which Sanderson scored a goal. Sanderson's goal helped force overtime.

Halfway through overtime, Drake Batherson drew a penalty on Rasmus Andersson. However, the Senators couldn't score on Flames goaltender Devin Cooley, and a shootout would be then needed.

In the shootout, Batherson and Tim Stutzle each scored and the Flames failed on their two attempts against Linus Ullmark for the Senators to earn the win.

After allowing in six goals last game against the Blackhawks, Ullmark was better with making 27 saves. Eller recorded a two-point game.

The Senators will return to action when they meet the Montreal Canadiens for the first time this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Bell Centre on Saturday night. Last season, the Canadiens won three of the four meetings against the Senators.
