Thursday night was the Ottawa Senators' final game of October. The Senators finished the month with a 4-3 shootout win to the Calgary Flames at home. It was then time to get ready for the first November game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Last season, the Senators didn't fare well against the Canadiens with losing three of the four games. In a new season to turn the tables, it once looked like a rally for the Senators, but then it was gone.

The Canadiens defeated the Senators 4-3 in overtime at Bell Centre. With the loss, the Senators fell to 6-5-2 overall on the season.

Prior to the game, the Senators switched up their uniform with wearing a black helmet with their white jerseys over their white road helmets.

For the 11th time in 13 games this season, the Senators found themselves trailing 1-0 when Cole Caufield scored his 10th goal of the season 7:05 into the game. Less than two minutes after Caufield's goal, Kurtis MacDermid was hit with a roughing penalty, which then led to a Juraj Slafkovsky powerplay goal. Both goals were scored in a span of 2:20 against Linus Ullmark. The Canadiens led 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

Looking to find any offensive momentum, Drake Batherson scored his fifth goal of the year to cut the deficit to 2-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in the second period. With his goal, Batherson extended his point streak to five games. Right before the period ended, Michael Amadio scored on a deflection to tie the game at two heading into the second intermission. Amadio recorded his third goal over the past six games with scoring his goal.

In a tight third period halfway through, Tim Stutzle then remained hot with scoring a goal to give the Senators a 3-2 lead with 7:33 remaining in regulation. Batherson recorded his fourth multi-point game over the past five games with recording an assist on Stutzle's goal.

However, Ivan Demidov scored with 2:23 remaining in regulation to tie the game at three. Then, Alex Newhook won the game for the Canadiens 1:40 into overtime.

As tough as losing to the hated Canadiens might be, earning one point against the best team in the Atlantic Division is still a big positive.

The Senators will have time to rest before their next game. The Senators will return to action when they take on the Boston Bruins at TD Garden with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop on Thursday night. The Senators won the first meeting of the season against the Bruins 7-2 this past Monday at Canadian Tire Centre.
