This past Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators were shutout 5-0 in their last preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens at Videotron Centre. in Quebec City, Quebec. For the first time this preseason, a game in the United States was on the schedule next for the Senators.
The Senators had a clash against the St. Louis Blues. Eager to return to the win column after a horrible loss on Tuesday, the Senators had another horrible game.
The Blues defeated the Senators 7-1 at Enterprise Center. The loss put the Senators at 2-3-0 in the preseason.
The game started out rough for the Senators. In a span of 3:44, the Blues scored three goals in the first period. All three goals by the Blues happened less than eight minutes into the hockey game.
In the second period, things got worse for the Senators when Pavel Buchnevich scored 1:15 into the second period to give the Blues a 4-0 lead. Then, in a 27-second span in the final minutes of the third period, the Blues scored two more goals to take a 6-0 lead into the second intermission.
Fabian Zetterlund broke the shutout when he scored 45 seconds into the third period to make it a 6-1 game, but Dylan Holloway regained the six-goal lead with scoring a goal with under one minute play in the third period for the Blues. Zetterlund's goal was his second of the preseason.
Leevi Merilainen struggled this past Tuesday when he allowed in five goals against the Canadiens. Tonight against the Blues, the struggles continued with allowing in six goals on 19 shots on goal. Six different Senators skaters finished with a -3 rating or worse.
The Senators have one more preseason game on the schedule for this Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
