Heading into Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators were 2-1-0 in the 2025 preseason ahead of their game against the Montreal Canadiens.
The Senators were eager to build off from their 2-0 shutout win on Sunday against the New Jersey Devils. Against the Canadiens in their final preseason game in Quebec City, Quebec, the Senators were crushed.
The Canadiens shutout the Senators 5-0 at Videotron Centre.
In the first period, the Canadiens grabbed early momentum after an Oliver Kapanen goal less than five minutes into the game. The second period saw momentum continue on the Canadiens side, and a chippy period as well.
Patrik Laine and Alexandre Carrier each scored a goal for the Canadiens in a 2:39 span to extend the lead to 3-0. The period saw two fights between Canadien and Senator players. One of which was Senators forward Jan Jenik who had two fights in the game.
The third period was the same as the second period with the Canadiens scoring two goals and the game getting more chippy. Lane Hutson and Kirby Dach each scored a powerplay goal in the third period for the Canadiens. Three of Montreal's five goals scored in the game were on the powerplay.
Leevi Merilainen played the whole game for the Senators and allowed in five goals on 18 Canadien shots on goal, while Jakub Dobes recorded a 12-save shutout for Montreal.
After the two preseason games in Quebec City, the Senators will return to action for two more preseason road games before the regular season starts on Oct. 9 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The next Senators preseason game will be on Thursday night when the team travels to Enterprise Center to play the St. Louis Blues. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
