After defeating the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils on a back-to-back this past weekend, the Ottawa Senators headed to New York City to take on the New York Rangers.

The Senators fell 2-1 in the first meeting of the season against the Rangers on Nov. 1, but the second meeting of the season would be flat out awful for the Senators.

The Rangers shutout the Senators 5-0 at Madison Square Garden to drop the Senators to 24-19-4 on the season. It would be the fourth time in 2025 alone that the Senators were shutout.

So far this season, the Senators have had their fair share of bad losses this season, but the Rangers arguably handed the Senators their worse loss of the season.

Sens fall against Rangers for second time this season

The Senators found themselves trailing 1-0 after the first period after Alex Lafreniere scored. Just 1:50 into the second period, Arthur Kaliyev scored to make it 2-0. The first 40 minutes went rough for the Senators, but the third period would be an ugly and memorable one for both sides.

Matt Rempe scored his first goal of the season and his first goal since the 2024 playoffs at 3:34 of the third period. In a 56-second span, the Rangers converted on two powerplay chances to extend their lead to 5-0.

Hell broke loose in the third period when Brady Tkachuk knocked down Igor Shesterkin after crashing the net. After lying on the ice, Shesterkin got up would go after Tkachuk and a bigger scrum broke out.

Although the Rangers scored five goals in the game, they had three goals not count. Two were challenged for offside and the other was a high-stick. After the Senators converted on their second challenge during the second period, Travis Green pulled Leevi Merilainen for Anton Forsberg.

Shesterkin recorded a 20-save shutout. Shesterkin started both games against the Senators, and has allowed one goal on 61 shots on goal. Thirteen different Rangers recorded at least one point in the game.

The Senators remain on the road on Thursday night when they take on the Bruins for the second time in five days. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at TD Garden. The Senators won the first meeting this season in Boston against the Bruins 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 9.
