After questions were ringing whether or not 37-year-old Claude Giroux would be leaving the Ottawa Senators, those questions are now gone. Giroux and the Senators have agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Giroux has been part of the Senators for the past three seasons. In those three seasons, Giroux has recorded 193 points in 245 games as a Senator. Giroux has missed just one game in his three seasons in Ottawa.
The Senators getting Giroux to sign to a $2 million contract is big. With Giroux signing for $2 million, it can allow the Senators to not only re-sign other players on the team, but sign other free agents this Summer. The Senators now have over $8.1 million in cap space after signing Giroux according to PuckPedia.
It was important that the Senators got to sign Giroux to a fair price on both sides. Giroux signing for less can show he enjoys being in Ottawa after having a $6.5 million cap hit for the past three seasons.
Sens fans have loved Giroux since he's signed. Now, the love for Giroux can grow even more. There was worry that Giroux could seek interest in signing with the Montreal Canadiens if a deal couldn't get done, but that is done.
On June 24, the Senators did show signs that could things were ahead with Giroux when they included him in a Bonne St-Jean post with Thomas Chabot and David Perron. Those signs turned out to be true with the re-signing.

Giroux has bonuses in his contract to earn more money. Giroux can earn up to $2.75 million in bonuses for games played and playoff success with the Senators. The deal is very similar to Jamie Benn's new contract with the Dallas Stars.
With Giroux re-signed, general manager Steve Staios is showing once again he's committed to winning. The Senators have re-signed Nikolas Matinpalo, Tyler Kleven, Fabian Zetterlund and now Giroux. Staios also made a trade yesterday at day two of the 2025 NHL Draft for Jordan Spence of the Los Angeles Kings.
The work for Staios and the Senators will pick up more with free agency frenzy going to start in two days, but the re-signing of Giroux is a weight lifted.
