Tuesday night's 6-3 loss against the Montreal Canadiens snapped the Ottawa Senators' winning streak at six games. Thursday night saw one of the NHL's best teams come into Ottawa, the Colorado Avalanche.
The Senators and Avalanche had not played each other since Oct. 27 where the Senators fell 5-4 in Denver. In the second meeting between the two teams, it was complete domination from one team.
The Avalanche defeated the Senators 5-1 at Canadian Tire Centre to sweep the two-game season series. With the loss, the Senators fell to 36-27-5 on the season.
Early in the first period, the Senators offense came out of the gate strong firing shots against Colorado goaltender Scott Wedgewood, but the game would turn in Colorado's direction quickly.
In a 59-second span, Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson each scored a goal to make it 2-0 Avalanche 11:28 into the game. After Nelson's goal to make it 2-0, things only grew worse in the first period for the Senators.
Cale Makar and Joel Kiviranta each scored a goal in a span of 3:06 to make it 4-0 Avalanche. After Kiviranta's goal, Linus Ullmark was pulled from the net with 2:31 remaining in the first period. Ullmark finished with allowing in four goals on 13 shots on goal by Colorado. For the second consecutive game, Ullmark allowed in four goals in his start. Anton Forsberg would come in relief for Ullmark.

Nelson scored his second goal of the game under minutes into the second period on a powerplay. Nelson's two goals were his first goals scored as an Avalanche player.
Dylan Cozens would eventually break Wedgewood's shutout with scoring a powerplay goal with 4:01 remaining in regulation. With his goal, Cozens now has six points in seven games as a Senator since being traded over. The Senators finished the game with 16 shots on goal; Forsberg made 18 saves in relief of Ullmark.
The Senators will return to action on Saturday night when they start up a three-game road trip against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center. Puck drop for the game is at 7 p.m ET for the third and final meeting between the two teams.
The Senators and Devils each won one game in regulation against each other earlier this season. The most recent game played was a 2-1 win for the Senators in New Jersey from Jan. 19.
