Set to become a UFA at the end of this season, Kyle Turris needs to be signed or traded by the Ottawa Senators. Letting a player like that walk for nothing would be terrible asset management. It has come out that a massive three way trade has fallen through that would have sent Turris to Nashville.

Last night there were rumbling that there would be a massive three way trade between the Ottawa Senators, the Nashville Predators, and the Colorado Avalanche. The rumour was that the Sens would send Turris to Nashville and they would receive Matt Duchene from Colorado. The Predators would send a slew of draft picks to the Colorado Avalanche. It was also rumoured that Turris would be signed and traded as part of the deal. However, the deal fell apart last night as the Avalanche are rumoured to have been unsatisfied.

The Deal Falls Apart

A three way trade in it’s essence is difficult to get done. All three teams have to happy with what they are getting back which is difficult enough in a two team trade. The reason the deal feel apart is likely because Joe Sakic wasn’t happy with the return the Avalanche were receiving.

From the outside it looks like a great deal for all three teams. The Sens get a comparable if not superior replacement for Turris who is on an expiring contract. The Predators get Turris who they have been very interested in recently, and the Avalanche get a slew of draft picks and prospects to help with their rebuild. Unfortunately, the deal won’t get done today and possibly for awhile.

Still Time To Get Duchene

For the Ottawa Senators this was an interesting deal that could have been good for them both in the short and long term. Guy Boucher is rumoured to want Matt Duchene as he thinks he would fit well in his system. Additionally, with Turris on an expiring deal and Duchene still with two years left on his contract this gives the Sens more time with a top tier centre. The Sens would have two years to re-sign Duchene as opposed to one with Turris. Since Duchene has wanted out of Colorado for a long time there’s no reason to believe he wouldn’t re-sign in Ottawa.

Dorion has been aggressive in his pursuit of Matt Duchene from the start. There still may be a deal in the future. With both teams headed to Sweden next week Sakic and Dorion will get an opportunity to meet face to face. If Matt Duchene is to go to the Ottawa Senators that’s as good a time as ever.
