After dispatching of the rookie Montreal Canadiens in style by a core of 8-2, the rookie Ottawa Senators faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.

Unlike their game against the rookies of Montreal, the Sens were faced with adversity when they played Toronto. They quickly put themselves into a hole of 3-0 and were playing catch up the rest of the game. It would have been easy for a team of young players in a game that doesn’t really matter to give up in this position. However, they did the opposite. After the disastrous beginning of the game the Sens were the better team for the final 50 minutes of play. Although their play wasn’t immediately rewarded they were finally able to start scoring in the third period. Andreas Englund scored and then Matteo Gennaro to bring the score to 3-2. Then with just 1:13 remaining in the third period, Filip Chlapik scored to tie the game.

Following tying the score the game went to overtime. While in extra minutes the Sens took an unfortunate penalty that could have cost them the game but they managed to kill it off. The game would go to a shootout where they would win in the sixth round.

Biggest Standout

The biggest standout of the game was goaltender Marcus Hogberg. After allowing three goals early it could have ruined his confidence he bounced back and shut the door for the Sens. Selected by the Sens in 2013, the six foot five goaltender could have a future with the Ottawa Senators. It won’t be this year but he could be the goalie of the future.

Wrap Up

Playing without Colin White and Thomas Chabot who sat out the game, the Sens managed to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs. Few of these players will get a chance to play for the Sens this season, but they showed promise in this short tournament. If nothing else they’re already crushing the spirit of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
