Following the rookies of the Ottawa Senators trouncing the rookies of the Montreal Canadiens they will face Toronto. However, they will be without two big names, Thomas Chabot and Colin White.

Both players were in the lineup against the Montreal Canadiens. Chabot added three points and was just as dominant as expected. White surprisingly wasn’t on the scoreboard despite the team putting up eight goals. However, he was excellent at both ends of the ice. They are also the Sens most highly touted prospects. However, the Ottawa Senators have elected to sit them out when the Sens face the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This was likely done because management determined that they saw enough of each of Chabot and White that they know that they will be at training camp. Both players are far superior players to many of the other prospects participating in the tournament. Benching the two potential stars allows the coaching staff to better scout the progress of the other lesser known prospects.

Now many might say that this weakens the team and lowers their chances of winning the tournament. This is absolutely true. The rookie Sens are much worse without Chabot and White. However, the purpose of the rookie tournament is not to win it, it’s to get an idea of how much the prospects have progressed throughout the summer. It’s to see which ones will be invited to training camp. Whether your team loses every game or none of them is not the factor that determines success.

Going into their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs the rookies of the Ottawa Senators will have more pressure on them to perform. They won’t be in the shadow of two players who have already seen time in the NHL. Notably, Logan Brown will be the player brought into the spotlight as the highest profile prospect against the Leafs.
