The Ottawa Senators are still yet to make a big splash this summer, but the signing of a big name like Jaromir Jagr would certainly end the dry spell.

There were interesting rumours on Ottawa Senators twitter today. People were claiming that Jagr had been spotted in the Ottawa airport. Now these were very unreliable sources and were very likely false. But at the same time you never know it could be true, so let’s have some fun with it. How would an Ottawa Senators team with Jaromir Jagr look?

A Veteran With Some Flash

Jagr is definitely still capable despite his age, he tallied 46 points in 82 games last season. He could definitely help the Sens with scoring which is one of their more lacking areas. Playing on the right wing is also beneficial as it’s a spot the Sens lack depth. Signing him to a shorter contract would be fine as the Sens are in win now mode. Jagr would make the Senators better than they are today, presuming he doesn’t finally regress. Overall there are many benefits of bringing in Jagr.

Potential Problems

The problems with bringing in Jagr start with his lack of speed. While very skilled he lacks the quickness of many offensive threats. In Guy Boucher’s system he would likely struggle. The system itself relies on players being fast to the puck and battling it out at every part of the ice. Jagr could struggle at this part of the game. It also should be noted that at the age of 45 Jagr could fall off the cliff in performance at any time. If that were to happen the Sens would be forced to play someone who is a detriment to the team. Now Jagr has shown no signs of getting worse in recent years but at his age that’s always a risk.

Final Thoughts

The rumours of Jagr being in Ottawa are very likely unfounded. However, it’s a fun idea that Jaromir Jagr joins the Ottawa Senators. You never know, it could work out. It wouldn’t be the first time the Sens nearly won a cup after signing a legend. Remember Domink Hasek in 2006? His injury could have cost the Sens a cup. Jagr could be the same story, unlikely, but it’s not a terrible idea.
