As free agency looms the Ottawa Senators are left with the decision of making a splurge on July 1st.
The Ottawa Senators have had an eventful summer already. The expansion draft came and there were rumours that the Sens would be able to swing a deal to save Methot. Unfortunately for the Sens, Methot was taken by Vegas and are left with a significant hole in their defence core. Now as free agency arrives the Sens could be poised to make a move for a defender. The most obvious choice was Michael Stone. The brother of forward Mark, Michael would have been an obvious fit in Ottawa. Unfortunately, he resigned with his former team in Calgary and the Sens will be forced to look for another option. Players such as Karl Alzner could be looked at as a viable replacement for Methot in the defence core.
An Interesting Choice to Help Scoring
Going beyond defence, an obvious area the Sens need help in is scoring. A strong defensive team all year the Sens never had trouble keeping the puck out of the net. However, they struggled mightily to score and could be helped by the signing of an offensive player. Unfortunately, it is a rather weak summer for free agents and the Sens will be hard pressed to find that extra scoring touch. With the Sens in win now mode the answer could be someone such as Jaromir Jagr. Jagr has shown interest in playing for a few more years but has been struggling to find interest from teams as a free agent. He’s still able to contribute as he scored 46 points last year and with the Sens in their championship window taking a flyer on Jagr could be beneficial.

An Eventful Summer
Free agency will be an interesting time for Ottawa. In years past it’s been common for Ottawa to make small moves in free agency but with the expansion draft damaging the lineup this year could be different. The Ottawa Senators could be poised for an eventful free agency.
