The Ottawa Senators had their best showing since their trip to Sweden in their game with the Kings last night. Unfortunately, they still fell in overtime to the Los Angeles Kings.

It was a game that could have been a turning point in the season for the Ottawa Senators. A late goal got the Sens to overtime, but ultimately, they would fall by the score of 4-3.

First Period

The first period was a strong one for the Sens. They out shot the Kings 16-11 and controlled the play for most of the game. However, it would be the Kings to strike first 14 minutes in. Despite this the Sens were net deterred and scored on the powerplay a minute and a half later. It was a goal by Duchene that was assisted by Karlsson, breaking the captain’s pointless streak. The period ended 1-1.

Second Period

The second period saw the Kings open the scoring once again, this time much earlier at the five minute mark. However, the Sens scored once again to tie it up, this time off a goal by Pageau. The rest of the period went on without incident and would end 2-2.

Third Period

The third period was the weakest for the Ottawa Senators. The Kings dominated for most of the period. Despite Condon shutting the door for most the period he was unable to stop a strange deflection by Dustin Brown and the Kings took the lead with three minutes remaining. All hope seemed lost for the Sens, but with 10 seconds remaining Duchene made a remarkable play that led to a goal by Ryan Dzingel. The game was going to overtime.

Overtime

Overtime was a rather short affair as a questionable non-call led to the Kings getting an odd man rush. With Duchene the only man back, Drew Doughty sniped on Condon to give the Kings the victory.

A Moral Victory

There haven’t been many moral victories for the Sens in this losing streak, but this can certainly be looked at as one. The Sens were the superior team for the first two periods and showed great resilience to tie the game late. While they didn’t come out with a win, they got a well earned point. However, moral victories will only get them so far, this deep in a losing streak. The Sens need to turn this moral victory into a turning point in the season.
