The long wait for Alexander Mogilny is over after last playing in the 2005-06 season. Today, it was announced that Mogilny will be part of the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2025.
In his NHL career, Mogilny recorded 1,032 points in 990 games. While Mogilny won the 2003 Lady Byng Trophy, his 2000 Stanley Cup championship with the New Jersey Devils is arguably the biggest moment of his career. Mogilny also recorded an impressive 127-point and 76-goal season in the 1992-93 season with the Buffalo Sabres.
The Battle of Ontario between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs is one of the most heated rivalries in the NHL. Sens fans have had the now Hall of Famer haunt them back in 2002.
Mogilny was a Sens killer in 2002 playoffs
It was the second round of the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Senators had a 3-2 series lead with a chance to close the series out at home in Game 6. Then, Mogilny happened.
After Todd White tied game 6 at 3-3 with 25 seconds to go in the second period, Mogilny scored the game-winning goal at 4:28 of the third period. The Maple Leafs forced a Game 7 with winning 4-3.
In Game 7, the Maple Leafs won 3-0. Mogilny scored the first two goals of the game for the Maple Leafs. Mogilny and the Maple Leafs eliminated the Senators in seven games.
Ironically, Zdeno Chara, who was also named to the 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame class, was on the 2002 Senators roster.
Mogilny's name can still haunt the Senators and their fans 23 years later as the Russian forward is finally on his way to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The long wait for Mogilny was respectfully overdue.
