The Ottawa Senators have dealt with numerous injury issues already this season.

The latest is forward Warren Foegele, who left Tuesday night’s game against Vegas with a knee injury.

The culprit, Jeremy Lauzon, only got a two-minute minor when everything was said and done. Beyond the on-ice antics, the damage now extends to the Senators’ lineup.

There is still no official word on the extent of Foegele’s injury, but according to Sens insider Bruce Garrioch, the situation could trigger a move for the organization.

“The Senators will likely have to recall a forward from their American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville as their trip continues Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena.”

All right, so nothing Earth-shattering there. But Garrioch went on to speculate about the possibility of a trade. And that avenue isn’t one that the Senators could easily tap into.

“They need a player who can fit into the top nine and contribute offensively by putting the puck in the net.”

Yes, the Sens, as well as the rest of the league, are looking for such a player. Who doesn’t need a top-nine forward who can score and play some tough depth minutes?

That situation means that finding a replacement won’t be easy. Even if such a player were available somewhere, it wouldn’t be cheap to pry him away.

Senators may have no choice but to suck up another injury

The bottom line is that the Senators may have no other choice but to suck up Foegele’s absence. Since there isn’t a team out there dumping players right now, the Sens will need to turn over stones to see if anyone is willing to part with the sort of player Ottawa needs.

Perhaps teams like the Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins may be willing to pack it in early this season. The Penguins have been rumored to have Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell on the block. The issue is that Pittsburgh won’t be looking to move either player for two seventh-round picks.

That’s where the situation could get complicated. Finding a player similar to Foegele or even close to William Eklund should prove to be a tall order.

But if the Senators struggle amid the rash of injuries, Steve Staios may have no other choice but to figure out a more permanent solution.

For now, the next stop is Los Angeles. A win, if anything, will help alleviate the pressure on the organization. That’s why the next game will be a crucial one for the entire club.
