Last season, Ridly Greig recorded 26 points in his true rookie season. Entering this season at 22 years old, the former 28th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft was in need of taking a big step.
Greig started off this season with scoring two goals in the first nine games he played in. Then, a cold slump happened when Greig went 19 consecutive games without scoring a goal.
Potential is still there for Greig with being young. On Jan. 10, Greig signed a four-year extension to remain a Senator. The Senators want Greig to be a piece of the future. If there's one thing that is helping Greig this season be a piece of the future, it's his ability to play when the Senators have a man advantage and when the Senators are down a man.
Greig's special teams talents have surged this season
As of the morning of Feb. 1, Greig has 15 points this season. While some may not think it's not a lot of point production, Greig's making his play worth it on special teams.
Out of his 15 points, Greig has recorded five powerplay points this season. Three of Greig's five powerplay points have been goals. Greig has recorded more powerplay points this season than last season's two powerplay points.
Greig has also recorded three shorthanded points this season, which is tied for the second most on the Senators. Of Greig's three shorthanded points, two of them are goals, which is tied for the most on the Senators with Shane Pinto and Josh Norris.
This season, more than half of Greig's points have come on special teams. Over the past two games, Greig has scored the Senators' first goal of the game on special teams. Greig scored a shorthanded goal this past Sunday against the Utah Hockey Club and scored a powerplay goal two nights ago against the Washington Capitals. Greig's powerplay goal against the Capitals helped David Perron record his first point as a Senator.
Along with being a rising player on special teams, Greig has continued to show his potential this season. Greig had a stretch of scoring four goals over a six-game span and has recorded two assists in a single game twice this season.
As 51 games are now complete for the Senators, it's still plenty of time for Greig to showcase more of his special teams talent this season. Five games remain for the Senators before the start of the 4 Nations Face-Off.
