Nick Cousins joined the Ottawa Senators on a one-year deal before the season started. In October and November, Cousins struggled to begin his Senators tenure by recording four points combined in October and November.
December was when Cousins started to turn his season around. Cousins recorded seven points in December, but has struggled in January with only recording two points.
The Senators have been battling injuries all season long with Linus Ullmark, David Perron, Artem Zub, Shane Pinto and Nick Jensen. Now, the Senators can add Cousins.
Cousins will be "out for awhile"
During the first period of tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Cousins had a knee-on-knee collision with the Maple Leafs' Jacob Quillan. While Quillan would still be able to play, Cousins would need to be helped off the ice to the dressing room. Cousins wouldn't return to the game after playing just 1:20.
Even without Cousins, the Senators still earned a big 2-1 win against the Maple Leafs. But now, Cousins won't be back in the lineup any time soon.
Following the game, head coach Travis Green said that Cousins will be "out for awhile." Not having Cousins could impact the Senators' bottom-six for some time.
Matthew Highmore played a good game by recording an assist against the Maple Leafs and Shane Pinto scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season. When Cousins went out, Highmore and Pinto responded with the offense. Travis Green also gave high praise to Michael Amadio by saying he played his "best game."
The Senators will now have to prepare without Cousins going forward as the Senators host the Utah Hockey Club tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET.
