I still can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that the Ottawa Senators are set to pick three times in one of the best-looking drafts ever. This is a potential franchise-changing moment, whenever it happens. The entire first round of the draft is loaded with talent, and the results of this draft will pay dividends for years to come.

Side note, it would suck to be a Leafs fan right now, they don’t have a first-round pick in this incredible draft, and with the looming problems with the cap, they could use a star player on an entry-level deal.

But hey, this is an Ottawa Senators blog so we shouldn’t spend too much time dwelling on other teams, especially division rivals.

Moving on to the matter at hand, the first two picks the Senators own in the first round will presumably land in the 1-6 range, so they will end up with two fantastic players who will play huge roles on the team going forward.

The question is though, who should they pick with the New York Islanders pick they hold, which will land in the 18-22 range depending on a few things.

Here are a few options for the Ottawa Senators to pick with the Isles first-round pick they own:

Dawson Mercer:

The Senators will be lucky if Mercer falls to that low in the draft, the Bay Roberts, Newfoundland native is a scoring winger with top-six potential. He put up 60 points in only 42 games in the QMJHL, including 24 goals.

Although he may be the best player available at this point in the draft, I doubt the Ottawa Senators will opt to choose him. They already have too many talented wingers that if they did draft him there likely wouldn’t be room on the roster when he develops into an NHL player.

Seth Jarvis:

Jarvis may very well be the steal of the 2020 draft.

He is an electric winger, putting up 98 points this year with the Portland Winterhawks, and had an astounding +53 rating through 58 games. He led the team in points and was the main driver of offence throughout the season, helped out by all-star goaltending from Team Canada World Juniors goalie, Joel Hofer.

He is expected to go 19th overall in the draft but he could easily jump to the 12-15 range. He has elite skills and could be NHL ready sooner than people expect.

Kaiden Guhle:

The definition of a high-risk high-reward prospect, Guhle could be part of the answer to the Ottawa Senators’ defence problem. But then again he could just be another fringe 7th defenceman. Senators

He would fit in very well on the second pairing alongside Erik Brannstrom, they would be an electric pair and can play responsibly in both ends of the ice.

In short, it heavily depends on where the lottery balls land to determine where the Senators pick with their third first-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft.
