The Ottawa Senators announced Friday afternoon that the club had made 11 cuts from their training camp roster heading into the weekend.

Ottawa Senators head coach DJ Smith had informed the media assembled at the Canadian Tire Centre that the team would be making cuts to their roster ahead of their Saturday night game against the Montreal Canadiens. Friday afternoon the club sent out a press release that they had release 11 players from the training camp roster.

Heading back to the QMJHL

The Ottawa Senators have sent their most recent seventh-round draft pick back to his junior club. Maxence Guenette has been sent back to Val d’Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League of the CHL. Guenette got into one preseason game on Wednesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Expectations were not very high for Guenette considering his draft position in past June’s NHL Entry Draft. By all accounts, Guenette is a project of a player but he does have the ability to develop into someone that could possibly play for the Ottawa Senators at some point in the future. I will be interested to see how his play develops this season in Val d’Or.

Released from a Professional Tryout

Tristan Scherwey was released from his PTO with the Ottawa Senators this afternoon and he will be returning to SC Bern of the Swiss League. If SC Bern sounds familiar to you, this is the team former Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher coached during his time in Switzerland. Moving back to Scherwey, the 28-year-old forward got into one game during his time with the Senators. Scherwey was dressed and in the lineup for the Senators in their first game against the Maple Leafs and scored a goal for the team to give them a 2-1 lead against the Leafs. With all that said and done, Scherwey clearly did not do enough during camp to show the club that he deserved a spot so he will be returning to Europe.

Sent to the Belleville Senators training camp

There are eight players that the Ottawa Senators announced would be heading to the Belleville Senators and would be part of the AHL team’s training camp. These players are J.C. Beaudin, Michael Carcone (acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer), Mark Kastelic, Jack Rodewald, Andrew Sturtz, Jonathan Aspirot, Nick Ebert, and Hubert Labrie. Ebert and Carcone will be required to clear waivers before reporting to Belleville.

The fact that Mark Kastelic is heading to Belleville is somewhat interesting to me. Kastelic was drafted this past June and could go back to Calgary of the WHL as an overager. As of this moment, he does not have a contract with the club, so the team would have to sign him to an entry-level contract if they want him to play in Belleville this season. With that being said, Belleville already looks like they have a lot of players coming in for this season, so I don’t know if there would be any room for him on the roster. I see this as the team wanting a little more time before deciding what is going to be best for his development.
