Get to know your Ottawa Senators prospects: Alex Formenton
Get to know your prospects is back, this time we take a look at 19-year-old Ottawa Senators forward Alex Formenton.
Originally selected by the Ottawa Senators in the second round (47th overall) of the 2017 draft, Alex Formenton has done a great job of proving that he can be an NHL calibre player.
After getting drafted by the Senators he played for the London Knights in an injury-shortened 2017/18 season, netting 29 goals and 48 total points in 48 games.
His play in the playoffs that year was really impressive getting five goals and two assists in only four games.

His 2018/19 campaign went differently with stints in both Belleville and Ottawa. Playing two games in Belleville (2-0-0), and nine games in Ottawa (9-1-1) before returning to London.
In the 31 games he played for the Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, he registered 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 total points.
The King City, Ontario native then went on to have a sensational playoff run that saw him earn four goals and 18 total points in just 11 games.
Having a strong point-per-game OHL regular season and being one of the fastest skaters in hockey, Formenton will likely start the 2019/20 season in the AHL with Belleville, getting top minutes there to refine his game.
At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds he has the size to play in the NHL and he definitely has the speed but there are a few areas of his game where he will have to improve. such as his shot and hockey IQ, which he will surely do in the summer and his hopefully short stint in Belleville.
Being a left-wing is going to make it hard for Formenton to make it into the NHL on a full-time basis because the Senators are loaded on the left side with Brady Tkachuk, Anthony Duclair, Mikkel Boedker and Vitaly Abramov.
The Ottawa Senators management has done a great job developing a strong pool of prospects and are being very patient, so it looks like he will spend most of the year with the Belleville Senators with the potential for a call-up to the big league if necessary.
With the B-Sens likely going to be loading up for a long playoff run they will need all the players they can get. Which means there’s a good chance he will be put down into the minors for the AHL playoffs regardless of whether or not he is called up to the NHL.
