When people outside of the Ottawa Senators fandom talk about the team, one of the first things that comes up is attendance. This leads to the arena location and ownership problems. Now rumours are swirling that there could be changes coming with the Ottawa Senators.

For the past few years Eugene Melnyk has been in negotiations with the city of Ottawa to build a new arena in Lebreton Flats for the Ottawa Senators. This would bring the arena to a more central location in the city and would likely help the attendance problems.

Growing Disdain

Another problem in Ottawa has been the growing disdain for the team’s owner, Eugene Melnyk. He has become notorious throughout the league for not spending as much he could and being a “Cheapskate.” However, now there are rumours that he may be looking to sell the team.

It has been widely believed that Melnyk was trying to get the new arena so he could improve sales in the future. However, now it sounds like he’s trying to get the arena deal done so that he can sell high. Melnyk is trying to finalize the deal so that an interested party can purchase the team with a new arena deal already in place.

Guy Laliberté

At the moment the rumour is that Guy Laliberté is a potential buyer with Daniel Alfredsson purchasing a minor stake in the team. If this is the case than it would be the first change of ownership for the team in nearly 15 years. Melnyk purchased the team back in 2003.
