The Ottawa Senators are back in the win column. After two straight losses the Sens bounced back to win 3-1 over the Detroit Red Wings.

This game was the first after the Ottawa Senators crushing 8-3 defeat by the Montreal Canadiens. Putting that game in the rear-view mirror and moving forward was crucial going into the game.

First Period

The first period was up and down for the Sens. The Sens appeared to get out to an early lead off a goal by Cody Ceci. However, it was called back as goaltender interference and the game would stay scoreless. That is until the last minute of the first period when Mark Stone buried a pass from Mike Hoffman to give the Sens the lead. This gave the Sens a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

Second Period

During the second period Detroit got into serious penalty trouble. They took three straight penalties before the Sens took one and it cost them. On the first of those penalties Alex Burrows scored to give the Sens a 2-0 lead. For a team that started horrendously on the powerplay, they are now tied for eight in the league. There would be no more goals in the period and the Sens headed into intermission as they had many times this year, with the league.

Third Period

The third period went fairly well for the Ottawa Senators. They shut down Detroit to limit any comeback attempt. That is until with just three and a half minutes remaining the Red Wings scored to bring the score to within one. At this point it felt like the Sens were destined to choke up another game. However, they stood strong and after an empty netter by Nate Thompson the Sens would win the game 3-1.

The Importance Of The Game

This game was important for two major reasons. First a foremost the Sens were able to hold onto a lead and secure a regulation win. Secondly this was a huge bounce back game by Erik Karlsson. He was back to his dominant self and put up another two assists.
