The injured Ottawa Senators hosted Montreal looking for an easy two points. They came out of it with their worst performance of the season so far.
The Ottawa Senators were terrible last night, from Karlsson, to Anderson, to rest of their lineup, they were terrible. Falling 8-3 to the Montreal Canadiens this was their worst game of the season.
First Period
Starting in the first period, this was the only even remotely competitive part of the game. As many games started this season, the Sens got out to an early lead. Tom Pyatt scored just 21 seconds in to open up the game. However, within 10 minutes after the teams went back and for the score was tied at two. Then the Canadiens scored twice to end the period.
Second Period
Coming into the period down two goals the Sens had a chance but had to shut the Habs down. They scored once halfway through the period to bring the game within one. However, they let Montreal score twice in the dying minutes to leave the period down by three.
Third Period
The Sens never got a chance to comeback as Montreal scored five minutes into the third. Already down by four goals Montreal scored again to finish the game 8-3. By far this was the Sens’ worst performance of the season.
A Terrible Performance
The only player in the entire game that deserves any credit is Chris DiDomenico. He had two points including a goal as one of the least experienced member of the team. However, the rest of the team was atrocious. Anderson let in six goals on 15 shots and Condon wasn’t much better in relief. Karlsson was one of the Sens worst players and finished -6. Although I don’t generally like plus minus as a stat, if you are that low in one game there’s a good chance you were terrible.
The Sky Isn’t Falling
Now there’s something we need to address as Ottawa Senators fans today. Many people are calling for Karlsson’s head after one terrible game. Don’t get me wrong this was probably his worst game in his entire career. However, let’s not forget that he has 10 points in seven games. He’s still the best defenceman in the world and a top three player overall. As for the rest of the team this is a wake up call. Not every game can be close, and you can’t be complacent when facing weaker teams.
