History has repeated itself for the Ottawa Senators. They squandered a late lead against the Las Angeles Kings and lost in the shootout.

In a game the Ottawa Senators were trying to start a winning streak, they were nearly successful. If it weren’t for a questionable play by Mike Condon the Sens would be walking away with two points. Alas the play happened, and the Sens fell 3-2 in the shootout.

First Period

The game started off just about as poorly as is possible. The Kings scored just 24 seconds into the game to take the early lead. Fortunately, the Sens were not slowed by the poor start and fought back quickly. Just six minutes later Dion Phaneuf scored off a pass from Mike Hoffman to tie the game at one. The score would hold for the remainder of the period and the teams would go to intermission tied.

Second Period

The second period was a free flowing one. There were no penalties meaning it was all five on five play. However, despite numerous attempts at both ends of the ice neither team could score. The game went to second intermission still tied at one.

Third Period

The third period saw the Sens take a penalty just under five minutes in. At risk of giving up the lead the Sens capitalized. On a broken play the Sens got an odd man ruish while shorthanded. There was a scramble in front and Nate Thompson buried it to give the Sens the lead in the third. The rest of the period saw the Sens protect the lead while also putting on pressure. However, with less than two minutes remaining the Sens give up the tying goal. Mike Condon went behind the net and made a poor pass that found a Kings player. With Condon out of position the Kings were able to score the game tying goal and the game would go to overtime.

Overtime And Shootout

Overtime saw back and forth play with both team’s nearly ending it. The Kings had the best chance but were stopped by Erik Karlsson stopping the puck at the goal line. None the less the game would go to the shootout where the Kings would score twice on three attempts to steal the victory.

Outlook

Overall the Sens played very last night. They scored when they needed to and played the system well. If it weren’t for a split-second mistake by Condon the Sens would have won.
