The Ottawa Senators finally got one in the win column after their third game of the season. Going to the shootout for the third straight, this time they were victorious and defeated the Vancouver Canucks by the score of 3-2.
Going into the game the Ottawa Senators were in a must win scenario. Losing to games in a row is bad enough, but getting that first win is important for team moral.
First Period
The game started out well for the Sens as Cody Ceci scored four minutes in the give the Sens the lead. Unfortunately, there was a response three minutes later to bring the score to 1-1. That would be the end of scoring for the period and the Sens headed to intermission tied.
Second Period
Much of the second period saw the Sens pepper the Canucks with shots. However, their goalie stood tall and the Canucks scored to take the lead with five minutes left into the period.
Third Period
When the Sens took the ice for the third period they were faced with the prospect of losing their third straight game to start the season. Luckily just five minutes into the third Ryan Dzignel scored to tie the game at two. The period ended without further scoring and once again the Sens were headed for overtime.
Overtime And Shootout
Once again in overtime the Sens failed to see the game resolved. With the shootout looming the Sens were faced with a third straight shootout loss. Luckily it wasn’t meant to be, but it was a close call. The Canucks scored on their first shot and then each team traded failed attempts to score. With the game on the line Kyle Turris scored to tie it up. Two rounds later Mark Stone scored to give the Sens their first win of the season.
Takeaways
Once again the Ottawa Senators out shot their opponents by a large margin but ran into a hot goaltender. Overall they have played well in the wake of injuries. However, the Sens have been miserable on the powerplay. They failed on four attempts last night to score. After 16 attempts in three games the Sens have failed to score once. Although this will be helped when Karlsson returns it won’t solve the problem entirely. The Sens need to score on the powerplay to remain competitive.
Additionally last night the Ottawa Senators dressed Christian Jaros in what was his first NHL game. However, he was limited to just six minutes of ice time, not a big enough sample size to get a good read on him.
