As training camp begins for the Ottawa Senators the pretty picture that was painted of a complete lineup has faded. Injuries have become more apparent and the Sens won’t be as whole as once hoped. However, this means that young players such as Colin White will get an opportunity to make a name for themselves.
Prior to training camp the biggest concerns for the Ottawa Senators were that Erik Karlsson and Derick Brassard would start the season a little late. Unfortunately, those are much less of a worry as other problems come to the forefront. With the news that Clarke MacArthur has failed his medical exam the Sens are filled with a gap in their top six.
Not only is this news worrisome for MacArthur’s overall health, it is a huge problem for the Ottawa Senators. The Sens struggled with offence last season and made it deep into the playoffs off of stellar defensive play in a very rigid system. However, as teams begin to adapt to this playstyle the Sens will struggle if they don’t have the offensive firepower to fall back on. A big hope of the Sens this season was that having MacArthur back for a full season would add significantly to their offensive output. Unfortunately that won’t be the case as MacArthur’s season and career is once again in jeopardy.

With MacArthur out of the lineup Guy Boucher will have to turn to some younger options to improve their offence. The most obvious option will be Colin White. The grade A prospect out of Boston College has been turning heads in the two seasons since he was drafted. Developing into a strong two-way player he is exactly the type of player that Guy Boucher loves. Responsible defensively but able to put up points. With an opening in the top six it’s time for White to seize this opportunity and make his mark. The Ottawa Senators need White to step up now.
