Ottawa entered the 2010 Entry Draft without a draft pick in the first two rounds.

The Senators had dealt their 1st round pick, 16th overall on draft night to the St.Louis Blues in exchange for David Rundblad.  Rundblad was selected a year earlier, 17th overall.

The Senators acquired David Rundblad due to his potential.  Ottawa would leave Rundblad in Sweden for the 2010-11 season. The young Defenseman looked like the next Swedish star, scoring 50 points in 55 games for Skellefteå AIK.  Rundblad failed to reach his once so bright potential playing only 113 NHL games with 24 points.

After playing in just 24 games for the Senators, Runblad was dealt along with a 2011 2nd rounder to the Arizona Coyotes for Kyle Turris on December 17, 2011.

The St. Louis Blues selected star forward  Vladimir Tarasenko, 16th overall.  Tarasenko has played 304 career NHL games for the St. Louis Blues, collecting 126 goals, 128 assists, 254 career points.

Many would make the argument that the Senators should have selected Vladimir Tarasenko in hindsight but Kyle Turris has filled a key role at Center in the Senators top 6 and a leadership role wearing an “A” the past three seasons.

The Senators had acquired a second round pick in the” Dany Heatley trade”.  The second round pick was later traded to the New York Islander in exchange for Andy Sutton. The Senators own second rounder was traded along with Alexandre R. Picard  to the Carolina Hurricanes for Matt Cullen.

The steal of the 2010 draft came in the form of Mark Stone. Ottawa selected Stone 178th overall.  After being selected, Stone returned to the WHL’s Brandon White Kings playing 137 games and scoring 229 points in two seasons.  Stone also represented Canada at the 2012 World Juniors playing 6 games, scoring 7 goals with 3 assists, and winning bronze.

Stone has played 219 career NHL games for the Ottawa Senators, collecting 68 goals, 99 assists, 167 career points.

The Senators selected three other players in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft: Jakub Culek, 3rd round, Marcus Sorensen, 4th round, and Bryce Aneloski, 7th round. All three are no longer members of the Senators organization.
