Ottawa Senators Remember the Time Lazar Ate the Burger
The Ottawa Senators have been a part of numerous shenanigans over the years, but maybe my favorite in recent memory involved Andrew Hammond, Curtis Lazar, and a Canadian Tire Centre crowd showing their support in a very unusual way.
Puck Daddy on Yahoo Sports does a Summer series chronicling some bizarre instances in the NHL, and my favorite moment evoked was the time that Lazar got hungry out on the ice and decided to seize the chaotic moment going on around him.
The context of the situation is more about Hammond, though. During the 2014-2015 season, he took the league by storm with his stellar play as a rookie.
He went 20-1-2 with a 1.79 GAA and an amazing save percentage of .941 to lead the Senators on an incredible run to the playoffs.

As with most players who put up remarkable numbers, fans were more than happy to embrace him. Hammond was definitely a unique guy.
He earned the nickname “The Hamburglar” during his college days, serving as a clever double entendre to play off his name as well as his ability to rob opposing shooters with slick saves.
His goalie helmet has a picture of Alfred E. Neuman of “Mad Magazine” fame wearing a mask of the Hambuglar from McDonald’s.
Fans took it upon themselves to throw burgers onto the ice to celebrate the fantastic play of Hammond, and rookie Lazar chose to indulge himself with one of the burgers thrown on the ice.
Lazar probably figured that he could save money on a post game meal by getting a free hamburger, all of which would have just gone to waste.
Hockey is an exhausting endeavor, and quite an appetite is worked up by skating up and down the ice during the course of a game.

It might not have been the most hygienic choice on Lazar’s part, but it made for a hilarious moment during a time of so much hope for Senators’ fans and their team.
