Ottawa Senators Will Retire the Jersey of Daniel Alfredsson
The Ottawa Senators have announced today that they will retire the jersey of Daniel Alfredsson.
The ceremony will take place on December 29, 2016, and the opponent for that game holds some significance.
The Detroit Red Wings will be in town to witness the commemoration. They were the only team that Alfredsson laced up with besides the Senators during his storied career.
Perhaps no player is as synonymous with this current incarnation of the Senators as Alfredsson. He was captain of the team from 1999-2013.
He leads the franchise in career goals, assists, and points. He had 1,108 points while playing for the Senators. For some perspective, now other player even has 700, and only 3 others have at least 400.

Alfredsson is far and away the greatest player in the history of this franchise, and his number 11 will now hang in the rafters in remembrance for what he gave this team.
In what’s going to be the team’s 25th season in the NHL, it seems like great timing to honor Alfredsson like this.
The Ottawa Senators only have 1 jersey retired, excluding the 99 jersey that all teams retired once Wayne Gretzky ended his career.
Frank Finnigan’s number 8 was retired on October 8, 1992. Finnigan was the last surviving member of the original Ottawa Senators’ 1927 Stanley Cup winning squad, and helped in the campaign to bring the Senators back to the NHL.
Alfredsson’s jersey is a worthy addition next to Finnigan’s, as his place in this franchise’s lore is extremely distinguished.
I didn’t expect this to be the announcement that the team hinted at yesterday, but in hindsight, I probably should have seen something like this coming.
The big clue was the indication that former players were going to be in attendance. While it’s major news for an AHL franchise to relocate, would that have warranted former players being in attendance?

I figured this day was due to arrive soon, but wasn’t exactly sure when. Congratulations to Alfredsson. He earned it.
