Ottawa Senators Fall Apart, Anderson’s Return Saved In Shootout

This was an ugly one.

With a great start, the Ottawa Senators got off to a 4-0 lead, then things began to fall apart in one period being with the third, leaving a crucial two points on the table. However, the Senators ended up on the winner’s side by a score of 5-4 in a shootout over the Calgary Flames. Lucky for them.

GAME RECAP

The first 40 certainly went Ottawa’s way. The Senators managed to net two in the first period, as Ottawa had appeared to rebound following a shaky start to their Friday match vs Buffalo.

Alex Chiasson opened the scoring, as he registered his 10th of the season. Chiasson has lost his scoring touch of late and after putting up a pace worthy of 50 points through his first 20 games as a Senators, Chiasson is now looking at a 29 point performance.

Michalek widened Ottawa’s gap to 2-0, with his 12th of the year. Michalek continues to be a force since the new year as he has appeared to rejuvenate his career while playing on a line with Kyle Turris and Mark Stone.

2-0 after one, as the Senators continue their hot streak.

The second period was more of the same. Mark Borowiecki netted his first of the season, and Mike Hoffman netted his 24th of the year. I pointed it out on Twitter, but Hoffman’s 23rd even strength goal is good enough for 3rd in the league amongst 5v5 scorers. Only Rick Nash and Steven Stamkos having more.

The 3rd period is where everything fell apart for the Senators.

A parade to the bench started with a goal from Joe Colborne, where it was Mikael Backlund, and Kris Russel (2) who netted the others to tie the game up. For the Senators, it’s the first time all season we’ve seen a flop as great at this.

Overtime solved nothing, despite a solid 4v4 push from both sides. The shootout is where we were headed.

Ottawa falls behind early in the shootout, as Johnny Gaudreau fools Craig Anderson. In a shootout that lasted 7 rounds, it was Ottawa who came on top, with Erik Karlsson netting the winner.

5-4 Ottawa in a game where the 3rd point doesn’t matter in terms of the Eastern Conference, yet Ottawa continues their push towards the playoffs.

GAME NOTES

  • It will take quite the mental adjustment for Ottawa to take on the Bruins Tuesday. In what is to be Ottawa’s most important game of the year, the hot Bruins will come in knowing what’s on the line.
  • Mark Stone is a great hockey player, and Ottawa’s offence no longer continues to be an issue.
  • Senshot writer, Josh Chenoweth pointed this out on Twitter
    • “Wiercioch & Ceci played 3:08 & 2:20 respectively in the 3rd. Gryba & Boro: 8:09 & 8:24. WHY?”
  • Ottawa’s defence continues to be an issue, here’s hoping at some point the Sens diagnose the issue and fix it sooner or later.
  • Performances like tonight tell me why Ottawa isn’t a playoff team.
  • Milan Michalek continues to produce. That’s great to see.
  • Andrew Hammond or Craig Anderson?
