Ottawa Senators’ Trade Deadline History 2009 – 2015
The 2015 NHL Trade deadline is nearly upon us. In past years, Ottawa has been active and despite expectations of staying under-the-radar this year, let’s take a look at Bryan Murray’s track record and see if previous trends can hold up.
Despite Murray’s often talk against rental player, we see he has gone that route in the past and perhaps Ottawa looks to trade a veteran or two this year to offload a contract and take on an expiring deal.
Here’s a look at the past 5 NHL Trade Deadlines, and Ottawa’s activity in each.
2009 NHL Trade Deadline:
Here’s Murray’s biggest trade deadline move. Murray trades a guy who would have a career year in Columbus the next season and acquires an injury-riddled goaltender as well as a draft pick.
Pascal Leclaire’s contract would finish up in Ottawa, where he would retire soon thereafter. The 2nd round pick turns into Robin Lehner who redeems the deal for Ottawa.
Ottawa had success in the 2009 2nd round, selecting Lehner and Jakob Siflverberg. With 2 second round picks this off-season in a draft that is considered strong, Ottawa could have a chance to select a pair of good prospects.
2010 NHL Trade Deadline:
2010 is a quiet year for Bryan Murray, in what looks to be a playoff bound season, Murray makes the addition of Andy Sutton. Murray gives up a 2nd round pick in exchange for a defender with size.
Sutton stays in Ottawa for the rest of the season, but does not re-sign in Ottawa, leaving for Anaheim as a free agent.
2011 NHL Trade Deadline:
The 2011 trade deadline was a quiet one for Bryan Murray, but the 2011 trade season wasn’t. In 2011, Ottawa declared “full rebuild” and shipped out vets such as Alex Kovalev, Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly and Jarkko Ruutu for futures.
Bryan Murray’s only deadline deal sees the Senators ship Chris Campoli and a 7th round pick in exchange for Ryan Potulny and a 2nd round pick. Another futures deal which sees the Senators later flip the 2nd, along with their own to select Matt Puempel 24th overall.
2012 NHL Trade Deadline:

Murray’s 1st of 2 consecutive deadline deals with the Tampa Bay lightning, he ships out struggling former 9th overall defender Brian Lee in exchange for Matt Gilroy. Gilroy plays 17 games in Ottawa, but isn’t brought back in the off season as he takes a minor league deal with the New York rangers.
Lee finishes the season with Tampa and switches between Syracuse and Tampa in 12-13 until retiring after a once promising career is ravaged by Injuries.
Ottawa acquires an AHL star, and NHL star in the making, Ben Bishop. At 6foot6, he’s an interesting addition to the team. However, with Robin Lehner coming off a Calder Cup MVP award and looking like the goaltender of the future, Bishop doesn’t last.
Bishop is shipped out at next year’s trade deadline after a solid shortened season in Ottawa.
2013 NHL Trade Deadline:
Murray makes a move to ship out Ottawa’s 3rd goalie during a season where goaltending was Ottawa’ s brightest spot. Youngster Robin Lehner was set for the future and Craig Anderson was an MVP candidate until injury. Ottawa loses the deal looking back as Tampa gained a legit #1 starter.
Murray stands behind the fact that he wouldn’t have tendered Ben Bishop come the off-season and that at the time Cory Conacher seemed like a good return, all to be put on waivers the next season.
2014 NHL Trade Deadline:
Bryan Murray’s main move at the 2014 deadline came after months of talk about Ottawa looking to add a forward. Murray had stressed that he wasn’t going after a rental type player, but ended up shipping two picks to Edmonton to acquire Ales Hemsky, who had scored 2 goals vs Ottawa a day prior to becoming a Senator.
In 20 games with the squad played nicely and was nearly a PPG player. Chemistry was developed with Center Jason Spezza, where Hemsky bolted to Dallas come free agency with Spezza after seeking $5 million from the Senators.
Solid move, but a little odd considering Murray’s target never was a rental player.
Murray added two more minor deals on the day, acquiring two defenders fit for Binghamton’s playoff run. Binghamton was in the middle of a solid season and Murray acquired two sollid AHL defencemen to bolster Binghamton’s roster come the playoffs.
The playoff run ran a little short, as Binghamton was stopped in their tracks come a 1st round visit vs Wilkes-Barre. Grant and Mullen are still in the system and have each played a role on a disappointing Binghamton team.
