Ottawa Senators Lose More Than Just the Game Against Carolina Hurricanes
The Ottawa Senators were unable to continue to have the same success they’ve had these past few games with a regulation loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Robin Lehner and Clarke MacArthur were both injured and did not return to the game. Though on the bright side, Shane Prince got his first NHL point.
GAME RECAP
The game’s first goal came just before the seven minute mark. Andrej Nestrasil circled behind the Senators’ net, bringing the puck beside Robin Lehner. Nestrasil then took a weak shot from a horrible angle that managed to bounce off the inside of Lehner’s stick, directing it into the net.
The Senators tied the game before the end of the first period. Prince took the puck into the offensive zone, and made a pass across to Erik Karlsson. Karlsson’s shot on net ended up in the skates of Erik Condra. Condra got his stick on the puck, and put it past Cam Ward. Prince was awarded an assist on the play.

About mid-way through the second period, Jeff Skinner gave the Hurricanes their second lead of the game. Andrej Sekera‘s point shot deflected off of Riley Nash, and got to Jeff Skinner beside the Ottawa net.
The Senators would tie the game yet again just a few minutes later. Karlsson entered the offensive zone, and sent the puck across the zone to Mika Zibanejad. Zibanejad’s shot was deflected off of Mike Hoffman who was parked in front of the net.
It took just a few minutes for the Hurricanes to regain the lead. Nathan Gerbe took a wrist shot from the point, and put what should have been a routine save past Lehner.
However, it took less than a minute for the Senators to tie the game yet again. Zibanejad took the puck to the corner of the offensive zone, fighting off a Hurricane defender. Zibanejad sent the puck in front, which was deflected by Cody Ceci‘s leg, and ended up in the back of the net. The play was reviewed, but it was determined that there was no distinct kicking motion. The game was tied.
Considering how the game had been up to this point, I’m sure you can assume what happened next. Yes, the Hurricanes regained the lead. Patrick Dwyer, Brad Malone and Jay McClement executed a textbook tic tac toe play, though I don’t think the textbook has “injure two opposing players in the process” in the definition.
As McClement slid into the net after the puck, a backchecking Clarke MacArthur collided with Robin Lehner. After a few minutes, Lehner was able to stand up and get off the ice under his own power. MacArthur took longer to sit up, and needed assistance to get off the ice. Neither would return in the third period.
Just over two minutes into the third period, Michal Jordan (no, not that one. Check the spelling) scored his first career NHL goal to extend the Hurricanes’ lead. Elias Lindholm sent a pass across the zone to Jordan, who had a wide open net to hit.
The final goal came halfway through the third period. Chris Terry took a one-timer from a Ron Hainsey pass on the blue line, and put it past Andrew Hammond, who had replaced Lehner.
