Ottawa Senators Demolish Montreal Canadiens 4-1

The Ottawa Senators hosted a tired Montreal Canadiens team at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Ottawa Senators looked very impressive this evening.

Ottawa came out of the gates looking amazing. The Senators appeared to have much more gas than the Canadiens. The Canadiens looked fatigued from the outset. The Canadiens played in Columbus on Wednesday night and had to quickly travel to Ottawa. The Senators got to face Dustin Tokarski instead of Carey Price.

Ottawa had a remarkable first period. The Senators got on the board quickly. The Senators scored at the 1:09 mark. Mika Zibanejad won a faceoff in the Canadiens end. Zibanejad ended up scoring off a rebound with assists going to Mike Hoffman and Bobby Ryan.

The Canadiens scored at the 14:35 mark after Max Pacioretty surged up the ice and sniped one home. The game would not remain tied for long. Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored at the 16:26 mark with assists from Mark Stone and Milan Michalek. Thomas Plekanek took two penalties in the period. The first period was an shining example of the Senators resurgence under Dave Cameron. The Senators outshot the Canadiens 20-6 in the period.

The Senators would put the game at 3-1 at the 2:16 mark. Erik Karlsson scored off a slapshot with assists from Milan Michalek and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Pageau continues his stellar play against the Canadiens. Montreal outshot the Senators 14-7 in the period. Bobby Ryan had a huge hit on Alex Galchenyuk.

The third period saw the Senators outshoot the Canadiens 8 to 6. The Senators added an empty net goal scored by Erik Condra. Craig Anderson played well throughout the game. Anderson saved 25 of 26 shots he faced. The Senators won the game 4-1.

GAME NOTES

  • The Senators came out looking hungry. They had much more energy than the Canadiens.
  • The Senators played a Canadiens team that was coming off an awful travel turn around.
  • The Canadiens played Tokarski and not Price. This worked in the Senators favour.
  • Jean-Gabriel Pageau had two points. He continues to excel against the Canadiens.
  • Ottawa outshot the Canadiens 35 to 26. It was nice to see the Senators outshoot their opponent.

The Senators host the Carolina Hurricanes on January 17th at 10 PM. If the Senators want to keep their fading playoff hopes alive they MUST beat teams like the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes only have 33 points on the season, far off from the 44 the Senators have. The game against the Hurricanes is a must win. The Senators need to start putting together winning streaks if they want to make the playoffs.
