The Ottawa Senators are beginning to come back down to earth and are starting to slump too. Without outstanding goaltending from Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner, the Ottawa Senators level of play is levelled with some of the leagues worst’s teams. Tonight featured some above average play from Craig Anderson but he’s not the one to blame.

The defence had trouble all night long just managing getting the puck past their own half after a rebound close to their net. The Detroit Red Wings dominated possession as usual for Ottawa Senators opponents. A problem that has hurt us all season.  The usual mix of bad penalties, inconsistent play and defensive struggles doomed the Ottawa Senators, resulting in another loss. Their third in the last four games.

Game Recap

First Period :  Early in the first period the Ottawa Senators would found themselves in a picture perfect situation. Penalties from Detroit Red Wings, Tomas Tatar and Kyle Quincey allowed the the Ottawa Senators to score on a five versus three opportunity, courtesy of a point shot from Kyle Turris. Kyle Turris’ fourth goal of the season. What seemed to be a big game changing moment was Chris Neil’s hooking call on Johan Franzen. This allowed the Detroit Red Wings to score just moments later after the call was made. It was all down hill from there for the rest of the first period for the Ottawa Senators. The Detroit Red Wings managed to out shoot Ottawa, 19-7 in the first period alone.

Second Period: The early period momentum swings would continue in the second. A tripping call by Craig Anderson on Gustav Nyquist helped the Detroit Red Wings continue their dominance. With the Detroit Red Wings on the power play Riely Sheanhan scored his fourth goal of the season. This time off a juciy rebound from the pad of Craig Anderson, which found its way to the stick of Riely Sheanhan. It didn’t stop there either, Stephen Wiess later in the second, scored his first and second goal of the season and his 400th career point. The Detroit Red Wings were up 4-1 at the end of the second period.

Third Period: Erik Karlsson quickly starts the scoring in the third period, 2:43 into the third from a wicked wrist shot that gets pasted Jimmy Howard. Making it a 4-2 game. The Ottawa Senators did look human and alive in the third period, with a 25-15 Corsi For, the chances for Ottawa to come back were there. A last minute goal from Chris Neil with the goalie pulled, brought the game within one. But as always it’s a little too late for Ottawa. Two very questionable icing plays by the Ottawa Senators would seal the deal and give the Detroit Red Wings their 11th win of the season.

Stephen Wiess – 2 Goals – +2 – 10:42 Minutes of Ice Time
Tonight was a huge bounce back game for the struggling Detroit Red Wing. Constant injuries have plagued the former Florida Panther from his top level of play he displayed back in Florida. Something the Detroit Red Wings really expected from him when he signed back in 2013.

Notes and Observations

  • The entire team stunk tonight from the get go. Can’t finger point at one single player
  • Can we please just have Bobby Ryan back on the first line. I’m asking for the 10th time this season.
  • This is the result you’re going to get when Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner play just above average. Yes they’ve been amazing all season long but a couple of rebounds are costing them, especially the way our defence is playing it make the goalies look even worse.
  • Congrats to Stephen Wiess on his 400th career point.
  • Playing St.Louis tomorrow isn’t going to be fun. This is going to be a rough week for Senators fans to handle, a lot of crazy comments will be thrown around, trust me.

Up Next: The Ottawa Senators are off to St.Louis, Missouri to take on the Blues. After losing 3-2 in regulation this past Saturday, I expect another tough challenge on the road for the Ottawa Senators.
