The Calgary Flames continue to their impressive start to the season with another “W” in the win column. The Ottawa Senators managed to keep the Calgary Flames under thirty shots over the course of the full game, ten shots below their season average. What hurt Ottawa’s chances in this is game is their ability to score on the power play, this followed by a few defensive miscues and the Calgary Flames “Speed Kills” motto.
RECAP
First Period : For the first ten minutes of the game it was a stalemate. Nothing out of the ordinary happened other then constant puck battles along the boards. Fast forward to twelve minutes into the first and the Ottawa Senators open the scoring. Clarke MacArthur scores his 8th goal of the season. The initial outlet pass from Erik Karlsson came off an impressive back hander to make it’s way to Kyle Turris, a simple pass to Clarke and the rest was history. Ottawa Senators up 1-0. The Calgary Flames defencemen, Mark Giordano did leave during the first period because of a high stick off a Chris Neil follow through shot. No penalty was rewarded and Mark Giordano managed to return back to the game after he left for the locker room.

Second Period : The Calgary Flames began to implement their game plan in the second period and it was evident. The Calgary Flames were on the Ottawa Senators tail after the puck was dropped and dominated, whether the Ottawa Senators won the faceoff or not the Calgary Flames were always there to challenge them. The Calgary Flames were able to tie the game up off a beautiful pass from Josh Jorris to Paul Byron who managed to blow past Mark Borowiecki. “Speed Kills” was written all over the play and Calgary Flames perfected it. A fight between Mark Borowiecki and Brandon Bollig broke out after a hit thrown by Mark Borowiecki was made.
Third Period : Early in the third period the Calgary Flames were able to get the balling rolling again, a Lance Bouma pick pocket off Bobby Ryan’s stick led the Calgary Flames to their second goal of the night. Bouma was able to fight off Cody Ceci and find Markus Grandlund for the goal. The Calgary Flames would add another goal shortly after on the power play. A goal from Josh Jorris off a Craig Anderson miscue helped the Calgary Flames extend their lead. The Ottawa Senators would cut the lead to one courtesy of a Bobby Ryan wrap around goal, his 4th of the season. But it was Lance Bouma that would seal the deal. The Calgary Flames center scooped up the puck from another bad play from Craig Anderson and just threw it to the back at the net, making it 4-2 Calgary.
Notes And Observations
- The Calgary Flames are fast and fun to watch.
- Mark Giordano, stats aside, is a legit Norris Trophy candidate. His play from last season has taken another step forward and he deserves more league wide credit.
- The Kid Line were quiet tonight, didn’t speak about them much tonight.
- I’m tired of seeing Bobby Ryan on the second line, he needs to play with Kyle Turris and Clarke MacArthur for now on, simple as that.
- Tonight’s game was just the second time all season that the Senators were able to hold their opponents under 30 shots on goal. We’ve played 17 games already…
