Game Recap

First Period

The first period of play resulted in zero goals for both sides. Minnesota’s Christian Folin received a penalty for delay of game at the 6:45 mark. The Senaotrs were unable to score with the man advantage. The Wild received another penalty at the 9:11 for too many men on the ice. The Senators were once again unable to capitalize on the man advantage. At the 15:01 mark off setting minors were called. Curtis Lazar was sent off for embellishment while Matt Dumba receivd an interference penalties. Lazar did absolutely nothing to warrant the penalty. This was one of the calls I hate to see from the officials. How can you call Dumba for interference and Lazar for embellishment? It is an absolute joke to call an equalizer penalty in a situation like that. That penalty exemplifies what I hate about NHL officiating. The shots ended up being 9 for the Wild, 5 for the Senators. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period.

Second Period

The second period saw the Senators being outshot 10-4. The shots the Senators took did end up being difference makers. The second period was a penalty filled affair. Marco Scandella received a ten minute misconduct and an instigator penalty when he fought Mark Borowiecki at the 0:57 second mark. The fight was fairly unevenful and broken up quickly Scandella fought Browoiecki for a hit he delivered to Jason Pominville. The Senators scored on the resulting power play. Clarke MacArthur picked up his 7th goal on the year on assits from Bobby Ryan and Erik Karlssson. The Senators would hold the 1-0 lead until the 4:47 mark when Mike Hoffman scored off assists from Eric Gryba and Curtis Lazar. Karlsson picked up a penalty at the 6:04 mark with a high sticking minor against Eric Haula. The Senators managed to kill off the penalty. Thomas Vanek took a minor for tripping against Curtis Lazar at the 16:03 mark. A little over a minute into the man advantage equalizer penalties were called. Interference was called against Patrick Wiercioch, embellishment against Stephane Veilleux. I don’t understand how you can call equalizer penalties in these situations. Was it interference of embellishment? The Senators were outshot 10-4 in the period, but managed to exit with a 2-0 lead.

Third Period

The Senators sealed the game away early in the third period. Mike Hoffman picked up his second goal of the game off assists from Mark Stone and Patrick Wiercoch. The goal came at the 2:06 mark and was the last goal of the game. The Wild had a 2-1 power play advantage in the third period but were not able to score on either of their power play opportunities. The Senators received another stellar performance from their netminder. The Senators were outshot 16-8 in the period. On the game they were outshot 35-17. The Senators once again delivered a winning performance despite being outshot heavily.

Senshot Player of the Game

Craig Anderson earns the Senshot player of the game. He saved every shot that was launched at him. The Senators were outshot 35-17, Anderson gave the Senators 35 saves. The goaltending performance from the Senators net minders this year has been nothing short of amazing. The Senators have been out shot in almost every game this season. Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner have delivered solid performances every time they have manned the crease.

Notes and Observations

The Senators were once again outshot. It is extremely fortunate that they have had such solid goaltending this season. It was good to see Mike Hoffman, Curtis Lazar and Mark Stone all make it onto the score sheet. It is impressive that these young Senators have been able to make an impact and stay up with the big club this season. Many critics wrote the Senators off in the preseason. The Senators have done nothing but deliver solid winning hockey thus far.
