NHL Free Agency – Ryan Miller, Brian Gionta, Brooks Orpik Signings

Unlike trade deadline day, NHL Free Agency day has been fast and furious as I try to keep up with the goings on.  Here are 3 more updates –

Ryan Miller, as speculated, has signed a 3 year, $18M deal with the Vancouver Canucks. He is a huge upgrade for the team that had probably the worst goaltending tandems in the NHL with Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom.  Miller is closer to his significant other on the west coast and finds a landing spot.  So Vancouver went from one of the best combos including 2010 Olympic gold medalist on Vancouver ice in Roberto Luongo and now have the silver medallist from that game in the fold.

The Montreal Canadiens will also be looking for a new captain after Brian Gionta signed a 3 year, 12.75M deal with the Buffalo Sabres. Gionta joins former teammate Josh Gorges, who was traded from Montreal to Buffalo earlier in the day as the Sabres try to climb out of the Eastern Conference basement.

Brooks Orpik has left the Pittsburgh Penguins and will go from playing behind two of the best stars in the game to…two of the best stars in the game.  Leaving behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, he joins Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom in Washington.  Orpik signed a massive 5 year, $27.5M contract with the Capitals.
