The Ottawa Senators headed to Seattle with a lot of confidence after their 3-2 overtime win on Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins as they started their crucial nine-game road trip against the Seattle Kraken.
The Senators were eager to sweep their two-game season series against the Kraken after they won 3-0 at home against the Kraken on Nov. 2. The date may have been different, but the results stayed the same.
The Senators defeated the Kraken 3-0 at Climate Pledge Arena to improve to 16-13-2 on the season. With the win, the Senators extended their winning streak to four consecutive games, and improved to 6-1-1 in December.
Having two games against one team resulting in the same score doesn't happen often, but the Senators made it happen against the Kraken with two consecutive 3-0 wins.
2. Second period spark
Shane Pinto had two disaster streaks end this past Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes when he scored two goals to end a 19-game goal drought and a 15-game point drought.
Against the Kraken, Pinto remained hot. Pinto scored the opening goal of the game at 8:02 of the second period to now have three goals scored over the past three games. Pinto also now has three game-winning goals this season.
With the Senators holding a 1-0 lead, Noah Gregor scored his fourth goal of the season, and his second goal in the past four games 4:43 after Pinto's goal to extend the Senators' lead to 2-0.
The Senators scoring two goals in the second period helped them set the tone heading into the third period. Tim Stutzle's third period goal 4:18 into the period turned out to be an important early insurance goal.
1. December cold still isn't stop this hot goaltender
One player that has turned his game around in spectacular fashion is Linus Ullmark. Prior to his start against the Kraken, Ullmark was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week on Monday for his brilliant goaltending from the past week.
After starting the past two games on back-to-back nights, Ullmark would be relied on in between the pipes again against the Kraken. Once again, Ullmark came through again.
Ullmark recorded a 30-save shutout for his third shutout of the season, and his second shutout over his past three starts. Ullmark is now 7-0-1 in his last eight starts. For the sixth time in eight games, Ullmark made at least 30 saves.
The hot streak by Ullmark has completely helped the Senators remain hot. With Ullmark's brilliance, the Senators now have 34 points and jumped back into the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins won in overtime prior to the Senators-Kraken game to jump the Senators in the standings, but the Senators jumped the Penguins with the win.
The Senators will continue their nine-game road trip tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET when they take on the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. The Senators won the first meeting against the Flames on Ottawa 4-3 on Nov. 25.
