So far, the 2025 preseason has been competitive for the Ottawa Senators. After last night's 3-2 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Senators are 1-1-0 in preseason.
Both of the games the Senators played against the Maple Leafs have resulted in one-goal games, and four games remain in the preseason. Two games in Quebec City, and one road game in St. Louis and Montreal await the Senators.
Although preseason is going on for the Senators, former Senators from last season made their preseason debut with their new teams this past Sunday. Now, two more former Senators from last season made their preseason debut last night with their new team, and both of them were solid wearing their new jerseys.
Dennis Gilbert
Last season, Dennis Gilbert was acquired by the Senators in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres. Gilbert was part of the Dylan Cozens-Josh Norris trade from this past trade deadline.
Gilbert's tenure in Ottawa was short as he only played in four games after being traded. Gilbert recorded one assist in the four games he played in, but he didn't play in the 2025 playoffs against the Maple Leafs.
This past off-season, Gilbert left the Senators and signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. In the Flyers' preseason game last night against the Montreal Canadiens, Gilbert recorded one assist. Gilbert recorded the primary assist on Anthony Richard's goal to cut the game to 2-1, but the Flyers fell 4-2
Anton Forsberg
Last season, Anton Forsberg had solid stretches as Linus Ullmark's backup. However, Forsberg had some inconsistency issues. After the season, Forsberg was a free agent and due for a solid contract as a backup.
With the emergence of Leevi Merilainen last season, the Senators didn't re-sign Forsberg to be Ullmark's backup for another season. Instead, Forsberg signed with the Los Angeles Kings.
Forsberg got his chance to make his preseason debut as a King last night against the Vegas Golden Knights. Against the Golden Knights, Forsberg was impressive.
Forsberg made 32 saves and played the entire game last night to help the Kings earn a 3-1 win on the road. Forsberg had a shutout going in the third period, but Villiam Kmec broke it up 8:38 into the period. Even with allowing in one goal, Forsberg still looked impressive for the first time wearing a Kings jersey.
