Ottawa Senators Fall Apart In 3rd, Lose In Overtime Against Toronto Maple Leafs

Ottawa Senators wasn’t able to keep pace with the Boston Bruins today as the Toronto Maple Leafs were able to overcome a 3-1 deficit and down the Senators 4-3 in overtime.

GAME RECAP

First Period

The first period started off with some end to end play from both teams.

Joakim Lindstrom would rush into Ottawa’s end and try to strong-arm Patrick Wiercioch, who chose not to take the body on him and instead took his legs out with his stick. It was a bit of a suspect call, but this resulted in the referee calling a penalty shot for the Leafs.

Lindstrom would come in slowly, but his hands weren’t nearly quick enough for Craig Anderson, who managed to get his right pad out, allowing Wiercioch to breathe a sigh of relief.

Shots were 9-7 in favor of the Senators.

Second Period

The second would start off well for the Senators, as just 5 minutes in Clarke MacArthur would manage to steal the puck away from one of the Leafs’ defenders, slide in on the left of James Reimer and get a pass off to Mark Stone. Stone then sniped a shot top right over Reimer’s blocker to give the Sens the first lead of the game.

Not even two minutes later Curtis Lazar would slap a shot from right in the slot and past Reimer. He half whiffed on the shot, and Reimer wasn’t able to track it as it fluttered by him.

More from SenShot

Afer this things got a little chippy.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau would cross-check TJ Brennan to the ice while the two jostled to get at the puck. Brennan would fire back another shot that Pageau would take exception to, and he’d end up dropping his gloves for the first fight of his career.

Shots ended up 21 – 21 heading into the third.

Third Period + OT

The third didn’t start like the second, as Tyler Bozak managed to fire one past Craig Anderson for his 20th of the season. This would be the sign of things to come as Bozak would end the night with a hat-trick.

Kyle Turris managed to get the Sens on the board in this period, but Bozak’s 3 goals would force the game into overtime, where Eric Brewer would eventually hammer home the game winner.

4-3 the winner, the Senators lose a crucial second point.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

  • Pageau takes a page from Chris Neil: Jean-Gabriel Pageau with his first fight of his young career. He’s been a sparkplug ever since he was called up from Bingo, and its efforts like these that will keep him with the big club for a long time.
  • Tyler the Destroyer: Bozak’s third period hat-trick really destroyed and hope the team had of putting this game away easily and quietly.
