The Binghamton Senators weekend is complete with two points to show for as the Albany Devils get a power play goal by Mike Sislo in overtime for a 4-3 win sending the Senators to their fourth consecutive loss coupled with Saturday’s OT loss to the Phantoms.

GAME RECAP

Albany’s Dan Kelly forces Ryan Dzingel hard into the boards and gets the call just 0:54 seconds in giving Binghamton an early power play and scores with Brad Mills initial shot is blocked by goaltender Scott Wedgewood but Cole Schneider is there for the rebound potting it home far side from the slot area for a 1-0 lead. Then Darren Kramer and veteran Cam Janssen wrestle around before puck drop afterwards with neither really connecting on any punches.

More from Belleville Senators

Devils tie it up when Paul Thompson gets a stick on the puck in-between Aaron Johnson and Chris Wideman and pokes it through Peter Mannino. Senators begin to drift back as Albany gets their legs and scores the go ahead goal by Darcy Zajac, as he re-directed the puck into the back of the net off a Raman Hrabarenka snap shot from the point and takes the lead 2-1. Shots on goal favor Albany 13-8.

Buddy Robinson on a semi breakaway gets slashed by Brandon Burlon as the Senators go on their second power play of the day. But the Devils kill it with Binghamton not establishing much on the man advantage. Senators’ defenseman Aaron Johnson gets a late hooking call to put the Devils on their fifth power play and cash in as Sislo’s wrister is stopped by Mannino but Tim Sestito is there pushing the puck in from the slot with three seconds left in the period giving Albany a two goal lead after two.

Binghamton trims the lead by one when Chris Wideman’s wrist shot from the blue line gets tipped in front by Robinson making it 3-2 with 13:50 left in the third. Binghamton with a huge opportunity to tie it up as Devils’ Cam Janssen receives a five-minute major and his day is finished after the hit to the head to Matt Tassone. However, they only muscle in one shot on Wedgewood as they are flat during the five minutes.

Just when the penalty expires, Derek Grant finds Carter Camper in front from the wall as Camper’s shot is in by Wedgewood to tie it up at three a piece with 2:46 left. Senators endure a late penalty kill on a careless play on Schneider’s clearing attempt that goes into the crowd as the game goes to overtime with the Senators shorthanded for the first 0:47 seconds of the extra frame.

That will come back and haunt them as Sislo scores from the left circle with the four on three man advantage 0:33 seconds in, putting Albany on top 4-3 in OT.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

  • Schneider now tied with (a rather quiet) Shane Prince for team leading 18 goals.
  • Max McCormick blocked shot near the end of the first burned bad as he was in some discomfort, but shook it off in time for the second period.
  • Robinson with another great effort getting loose for several semi breakaway’s as he ended with a goal and a team high 6 shots. Couple of them he looked to take the shot but mishandled the puck with his stick resulting on wrap around attempts.
  • Defense was missing on a couple of goals, which has been the norm all season long, as Mannino could only do so much.
  • Mills hits the post flush in the third as Senators struggled as perhaps fatigue set in after Saturday’s OT game and on the road for today’s match. He also slammed his stick on the bench breaking it with the blade reaching the crowd over the glass.
  • Shots end up, can you guess? You’re right! Devils, with a 35-27 advantage. Who would’ve thunk?
