TSN’s Bob Mckenzie joined TSN 1050 on Friday to talk the trade deadline. During the talk, Marc Methot‘s name came up in a response to a listener submitted question which had tied Methot to Pittsburgh.

Bob McKenzie’s take on the situation is one that Senators Fans should be interested in, as he provides a window into what we can expect in Methot’s contract situation.

AGENT MEETINGS

It was speculated that Marc’s agent, Mike Liut was set to meet with Bryan Murray earlier in the week, however speculation was corrected later as Murray and Liut had talks via e-mail.

McKenzie added to the record that Liut and Murray had planned to meet later this week, with hopes a contract could be done as soon as possible. “I have a funny feeling that it’s going to get done” McKenzie added.

CONTRACT AND POTENTIAL RETURN

McKenzie went on further to provide specifics into the situation between negotiations.

"On Numbers… Methot wants a five-year deal around $5 million and the Sens were looking at four years at $4 million. So it’s a year and a half a million to try and bridge the gapWhen asked about potential return… Ottawa will be looking for a first round pick and may have to settle for a second round pick and a prospect, but that seems to be the going rate for a rental"

A 1st rounder would be nice, but it’s rare we see that sort of deal go down for a guy on an expiring deal. That said, guys like Methot aren’t easy to come buy as a premium is certainly put on Top 4 defenders around the league.

As for a 2nd rounder and a prospect, I can see Ottawa taking it if the deal cannot happen. Yet, you’d have to be upset to see a solid top 4 guy leave for pieces that may never help your NHL club.
