Ottawa Senators Fall To Devils, 2-1 Despite Late Push

Tonight’s Devils/Senators game can serve as what many hockey fans, Eugene Melynk included consider “New Jersey Devils’ Hockey”

And in fairness, we really can’t just blame the Devils. These are two mediocre teams playing on a Monday night, the energy couldn’t be more alive.

GAME RECAP

The first period got off to a slow start, to say the least. It’s hard to even write down any notes on the first as it did seem as though nothing happened.

The Senators generated some chances, as both teams did exchange penalties. Ottawa’s PP has seemed to cool of of late after going through a recent hot streak, headlined by Milan Michalek.

No goals after 1. Of note is that Ottawa did not generate any scoring chances past the 9:15 mark of the first. More than a half period without a Corsi event.

The 2nd period did see some offence generated as Ottawa and New Jersey did get on the board. Curtis Lazar scored his 2nd career goal on a play where everything seemed to go right for the birthday boy.

Lazar’s goal came after a very poor read by Mike Cammalleri and after bobbling the puck a few times on a clear breakaway, Lazar buries this one. 1-0 Senators.

The Devils tied it up seconds later after a goal from Adam Henrique took a favourable bounce to put it past Robin Lehner. 1-1 at this point. The Sens and Devils would call it a tie heading into the third.

It was the previously mentioned Cammalleri who made up for his earlier mistake by sniping one past Robin Lehner. Cammalleri recorded his 17th of the year as he continues to put up a solid campaign.

The Senators would push late, ultimately falling to the Devils in what was a snoozer up until the last 10 seconds.

GAME NOTES

  • Bobby Ryan was buzzing tonight, you could feel he wanted it.
  • Nice to see Lazar on the board tonight. He had a few nice shifts, hard work pays off.
  • Milan Michalek had another nice game, nothing stopping him from having a big second half.
  • Dainius Zubrus hasn’t scored in 33 games. You could feel he wanted one.
  • Jaromir Jagr is still one heck of a hockey player. However, it only makes sense for New Jersey to trade him. He’s likely going to consider retirement this year, why not move him to a contender and gain an asset?
  • Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman both had great games, as though it feels.
  • Looking at Erik Condra, I think I’m getting to the point where I could accept losing him this off-season. Jean-Gabriel Pageau plays a similar role, perhaps better at C and is much younger than Condra.

SPOTLIGHT CARD

Zibanejad, like Bobby Ryan was buzzing tonight. Mika has essentially turned his season around after a rough start and has stepped in to become a reliable, 2nd line centre. He’s played 1st line minutes of late and as he continues his strong play, he gains more and more confidence under a new coaching system.  . #93 C. Ottawa Senators. MIKA ZIBANEJAD. A-
