As the Ottawa Senators entered their offseason, players and staff sat down for their final media availabilities before heading home. Many players spoke about their seasons, the team’s performance, and being swept by the Carolina Hurricanes. For Claude Giroux, however, the questions also focused on his future, not only with the Sens but in general.

Giroux is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and there has been curiosity about whether he has given much thought to what comes next. When asked, “Do you still want to play NHL games next year?” during his availability, Giroux responded, “It’s too early to even answer that question.” At 38, it seems he still has quite a bit to give, putting up 49 points (14 goals, 35 assists) in 82 games. However, at times, it did look like he had lost a step. Giroux was over 60% in the faceoff dot; that's about the only positive stat that can be brought up, as he was held pointless in all four playoff games.

Giroux spent most of the season playing on the wing with Tim Stützle and Drake Batherson. However, as mentioned, it was apparent he had lost some foot speed. Keeping up with Stützle and Batherson is a tough expectation at this stage of his career, and he isn't getting any younger. His skill set might be better suited to a third-line wing role, while still contributing on the power play and taking key faceoffs in important moments. Contract-wise, he was worth every penny he made this season and, if willing, should be signed to the same deal. It’s also clear that, after scoring just five goals against Carolina in their four-game series, the Senators need to add a top-six forward to complement Stützle.

Giroux has missed just one game during his tenure with the Senators and has produced 242 points over that span. He has been one of their most important players, a leader both on the ice and in the dressing room. Having a veteran presence like that goes a long way. If he decides to return, he should be welcomed with open arms. Players like Giroux don’t grow on trees, and they are becoming increasingly difficult to find in free agency.
