Tkachuk chirps his former teammates, but the Senators bench got the last laugh

Brady Tkachuk had some choice words for his former teammates when he made his return to Ottawa last week for the first time as a member of the Florida Panthers.

It has been just about a week since Brady Tkachuk made his infamous return to the Canadian Tire Centre. Senators' fans thought that the spectacular show they put on in front of their former captain last Wednesday night allowed them to have the closure needed to officially forget about the Tkaptain era. However, it seems like Tkachuk inadvertently made the Senators’ 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers even sweeter.

During an appearance today on the Coming in Hot podcast hosted by Brent Wallace and Graeme Nichols, Senators owner Michael Andlauer was the guest, and he revealed a new, juicy detail about one of the greatest regular season games in NHL history. After opening the scoring for the Florida Panthers in his revenge game, Tkachuk skated by the Senators bench in celebration and snarled, "Some things never change, eh, boys? ”.

Some things never change

As for what Tkachuk fully meant, it remains unclear. Was he poking fun at the fact that the Senators allowed the first goal of the game again, something that the club did 41 times last season? Could he have been boasting about his offensive production, which seemed to be on a hot streak, before returning to Ottawa? Or was Tkachuk simply mocking the club’s winning culture that they built with Tkachuk at the helm and have now retooled to be even more successful? Regardless of the intention behind the chirp, it was meant to get under the skin of his former teammates. This is a textbook Tkachuk move.

Well, it’s safe to say that Tkachuk’s comment may have set off the Senators roster but not in the way he probably intended for it to. Under five minutes after this hilarious moment, Senators' star centre Tim Stützle had a ‘hold my beer’ moment and scored a power-play goal to even the score. In hindsight, maybe this was why Stützle looked determined and maybe even a bit chippy after his game-tying goal.

The goal scoring did not stop there. After Stützle’s goal, Claude Giroux, Shane Pinto, Warren Foegele and Stephen Halliday all got on the scoresheet. After the fire that Tkachuk started, the Senators scored five unanswered goals and earned themselves a 5-1 victory over their former fourth overall pick and his new team.

In another classic Tkachuk move, he decided to take matters into his own hands to respond to the game not going his way. With a minus-two rating in just 13:13 of ice time, Tkachuk let his emotions get the best of him in a late third-period scuffle with Senators' pest and forward, Ridly Greig. While Brady’s emotions boiled over, his two-minute penalty ended his night early. This was a rather perfect ending to the Senators’ flawless night.

Trash talking is simply a part of hockey, and it is a staple for both Brady and his brother, Matthew. This chirp just seemed to be more deeply rooted in something else other than just on-ice banter. Maybe Tkachuk was right after all. Some things never change. Tkachuk still lets his emotions get the best of him, and the Senators know how to channel their energy with discipline and allow the scoreboard to do the talking for them.
